FAA orders Boeing 787 operators to replace outboard slat actuators
FAA Airworthiness Directive 2026-20-10, effective November 12, 2026, requires operators of Boeing 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 airplanes to replace leading edge outboard geared rotary actuators with lockout actuators at outboard slat locations and add a torque brake functional check to maintenance programs. It supersedes AD 2019-20-07 and addresses slats that could move out of position without flight deck warning.
Key points
- The FAA estimates 174 U.S.-registered airplanes are affected, at $32,375 per airplane for the actuator replacement.Federal Register
- Operators must add certification maintenance requirement 27-CMR-14, a functional check of the leading edge power drive unit torque brake.Federal Register
- Until replacement, operators keep AD 2019-20-07's repetitive checks and flight manual limit on flap retraction in icing after landing.Federal Register
- Doing the replacement ends those retained requirements; compliance times follow Boeing Alert Requirements Bulletin B787-81205-SB270055-00 RB.Federal Register
- An out-of-position slat without annunciation could cause insufficient lift and loss of continued safe flight and landing, the FAA said.Federal Register
- AD 2026-20-10 was published at 91 FR 64259 (FR Doc. 2026-20680) and takes effect November 12, 2026.Federal Register
