NHTSA finalizes SAFE Vehicles Rule III resetting fuel-economy standards for model years 2022-2031

NHTSA published a final rule on Sept. 30 recalibrating Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards for passenger cars and light trucks for model years 2022 through 2031. NHTSA estimates the standards correspond to a fleetwide average of roughly 34.9 mpg in model year 2031. The rule ends trading of credits earned in model year 2028 and later and applies updated vehicle classification definitions from model year 2030. It takes effect Nov. 30.
