California requires mass-layoff notices to disclose jobs replaced by AI

Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 951 on September 30, 2026, amending the Cal/WARN Act. From January 1, 2027, an employer giving notice of a mass layoff, relocation or termination caused wholly or substantially by AI or other automated technology must state which job functions will be automated. The Employment Development Department must publish summaries of the notices, including a quarterly statewide summary of technological displacements.
