California repeals Brown Act agenda-translation and electronic request-system requirements for large local bodies
California enacted SB 1187 (Chapter 324) as an urgency statute on September 18, 2026, amending Government Code Section 54953.4. The act deletes the Brown Act requirements, in force since July 1, 2026, that eligible large local legislative bodies maintain systems for electronically accepting and fulfilling requests for meeting agendas and documents, translate meeting agendas, and reasonably assist members of the public seeking meeting interpretation. Because it carries an urgency clause, it took effect on the day of signing.
