Michigan allows electronic return of rental security deposits
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Senate Bill 22 on September 21, 2026, now 2026 Public Act 102, effective immediately. It amends the Landlord and Tenant Relationships Act, 1972 PA 348, so a landlord may return a security deposit balance by direct deposit or electronic transfer to a bank account, or to an internet or mobile payment account, instead of a check with the notice of damages. The landlord must deposit the amount within 10 days of mailing the notice.
