Michigan requires fee-free rent payment option in every rental agreement
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Senate Bill 373 on September 21, 2026, now 2026 Public Act 103, effective immediately. It amends MCL 554.633 so that a residential rental agreement may not impose an added charge or fee on every permitted method of paying rent: where more than one method is allowed, at least one must be fee-free. A violating provision is void. The Senate passed the bill 24-12 on July 3 and the House 99-5 on August 25.
