California bans employer surveillance of workers in workplace bathrooms

Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1331 on September 30, 2026. From January 1, 2027, unless a court orders otherwise, employers may not use workplace surveillance tools to monitor employees in workplace bathrooms, and employees may leave such tools behind when entering one, except when they must stay available during breaks. The Labor Commissioner and public prosecutors may enforce the law, with civil penalties of up to $500 per violation.
